Match reportDamian Smith and Sacha Cooper (2) were first on court, with Damian taking the initiative and putting every loose shot (underhit lengths and loose drops) away with good tight lengths or drops to win the first game. Sacha struck back in a second game game consisting of long rallies with better, tighter lengths to level 1-1. Damian took the third in a similar fashion to the first game, but Sacha persevered with improved patience and quality of short game to level 2-2, then take a close tie-break decider to win 3-2. Dave Norton (4) was meanwhile playing Martin Ryder on the left hardback court. The first game was the closest, but ultimately Martin closed out the second and third to take the match 3-0. Home third string Cam Bryan was next up on the glassback, with James Telford freshly back from adventures in New Zealand hoping to avenge his autumn loss. James took the first game, with Cam striking back to take the second and third in many attacking rallies. JT took the fourth, notably opening up on the forehand to put the ball away when given the opportunity. Cam closed out the fifth to win 3-2. Simon Boucher (5) played Rory Anderson in the penultimate match on the left hardback court, losing the first two before effectively using his delay and deception to take the third 11-4. Rory's rallying game was enough to win him the fourth and seal an East Glos overall win. Tony Richmond (1) then played Mike Healey. The pair first played when Mike last beat Tony on his birthday on the Wycliffe courts 3-0 in February 2024, before Tony beat Mike in the autumn half 3-1. This time, Tony took the initiative in the first game winning 11-8, with Mike winning the next 2 with some especially good cross court forehands finding the nick near the back of the backhand side of the court, as well as the usual tight short game and delay. Tony took a close fourth 11-9, before Mike went up 5-0 in the fifth, exploiting a lack of concentration, then Tony bringing it back to 5-5. Mike was happy to close out the fifth 11-7. A 4-1 match win for East Glos D, with a game in hand over Stroud A. Top of the table position depends on how results play out in their final two matches, and Stroud A's final match at Monmouth on March 25th. |
